USED—AND ABUSED.

THE SLOT TELEPHONE,

Consideration Cur her fellows is not one of the virtues of a certain type ot modern youn woman when it comes to tlie use of—say. a public telephone. A ease in point came under notice yesterdav. _

A neatly dressed girl in lier ’teens tripped daintily into the telephone box and set about using the ’phone.. Minutes passed and three ethers who wished to use the telephone took their stand outside—hut the young lady who held the line prattled on—and still more minutes passed.

Optimists came and waited patiently. Pessimists snorted their disgust and went further afield. Put. engrossed in her occupation the loquacious one heeded them not.

Once, a sigh of relief swept the little semi-eireie outside as the receiver was slammed down, hut hope was dashed when it was realised that the views of another friend were about- to lie solicited. Time trailed on. but even the bootli-haunting variety of citizen cannot manufacture gossip forever, and at length the receiver was placed back uno-n its hook.

The end. however, was not yet and the patient waiters were fearful lest, like Dick Whittington, the maid would turn again. Last lingering moments with a, powder-puff, dexetrously wielded in front ,cf a small purse-mirror, a shush with a. -lipstick, and the impromptu toilet was complete. A. flashing smile was coldly received .by the enforced audience as a very selfsatisfied young lady stepped forth. Perhaps this as one of the queue asserted, is quite an ordinary occur-rence-—and perhaps it is not too much to hope that this recital of the facts will bear fruit in the shape of a little more consideration for others in the future.
