SPEEDING THE MAILS.
BETTER SERVICE FOR THAMES. LETTER FROM CHIEF POSTMASTER. The secretary of the Thames Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. Kernick, has received the following letter from the chief postmaster, Mr Black, relative to an alteration in the receipt of mails at Thames.
Business men will he gratified at the alteration, especially the position referring to Monday’s mails and the receipt of parcels. The letter reads: “The Chamber of Commerce will doubtless be glad to hear of a speed-ing-up which has just been effected in connection with inward mails for Thames.
“By using the 3 a.m. goods train from Frankton Junction, parcels posted in Auckland up to 3 p.m. and other second-class matter posted up to 5.30 p.m. reach Thames by 9 a.m. the following day instead of at 12.30 p.m. as previously—a saving of 3£ hours. “Another improvement is that additional mails from southern offices on Monday only are received at 9.30 a.m. These mails are carried by the Main Trunk express which leaves Wellington on Saturday afternoons. “Furthermore, Frankton Junction now makes up a mail for Thames at 3 a.m., and this includes correspondence ex Rotorua and branch lines, which reaches Frankton Junction about 8.30 p.m. the previous day.”
