MINING NEWS.

MANAGERS’ REPORTS. New Waiotahi. —The drive toward the Caledonian reef has been advanced 10ft. for the week, making the total distance from the starting point 207 ft., leaving 15'ft. to reach the boundary. The country is fairly tight but favourable for gold. v

Alburnia.—During the past week two men were engaged on the footwall branch of the Orlando reef, approximately 100 ft. north of the cross-cut. We are now up a height of 14ft. over the level and have narrowed the stope to a length of Bft. or 10ft. The reef maintains its width of about 3ft., and in breaking-down colours and blotches of gold were seen. The prospects here are favourable for meeting with good values.

Hauraki.— The last exceptionally heavy rain filled the Union Beach 180 ft. level. This, along with a mishap to the delivery valve of the 400 ft. plunger caused the water to rise and prevented the working of the seaward face at that level. The water has now drained from the 180 ft. level and is 20ft. down the Tangye winze. The water in the Hauraki shaft is now lowering steadily, and, given reasonably fine weather, the 400 ft. level should soon 'be clear. A 9in. plunger is being made and will be ‘installed alongside the present 12in. one, to cope with the increased water. The reef at the seaward face from which the recent gold was got has been surveyed and its position at the Union Beach working calculated. A reef corresponding to position, course and dip has been located at the 180 ft. and at the 130 ft. levels, with no workings at their intersections. A 3 start has been made to drive on the cross reef at the 180 ft. level, to get its junction with the Stockwood reef over the point where the gold was got in the 400 ft. level. The distance to drive will be about 50ft. The Tangye winze is .being overhauled and new ladders placed in position in readiness for connecting with the rise from the 400 ft. level.
