“SPARE THE ROD.”
A PEDAGOGUE’S STATISTICS. A grim statistical record of the achievements of an old-time American schoolmaster has been found (according to the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle) in one of the earlier magazines published in the United States, the People’s Magazine, of 1863. This is the record of John Jabes Hauberle, who, according to the magazine, “taught school for 51 years.” In that period he gave the boys entrusted to his care: — . 911.957 blows with a stick. 24.410 strokes with a rod. 29,899 “ferrulings.” 136,715 blows with one hand. 10,325 “slaps on the chops.” 7,905 boxes on the ear. T. 115,000 raps on the head. 12.342 “nota belies” with the Bible, Catechism, Psalm Book and grammar. He had also made boys knell 613 times on peas and 777 time on a three-cornered block of wood.
