THE MAIN HIGHWAY.

THAMES TO AUCKLAND. DEVIATION NOW FINISHED. For some time past th e local agent of the Auckland Automobile Association. Mr F. S. Miller, has been urging on his head office to bring pressure to bear on the powers that be so that th e deviation on the main road between Waitakaruru and Pokeno should

he put into. use. The last letter sent by Mr Mille: read as follows:

“I have been asked by several members of our Association to writ e you re deviation on the above part of the .Thames-Auckland main road. "The deviation referred to is about,a couple of miles long and appears to have been ready for traffic for some months past. The surface of the old road, which motorists are still compelled to use, is particularly rough and is causing considerable damage to tyres owing to the rough metal not being blinded. I have on several, occasions recently discussed this matter with your Mr Champtaloup. "Would it he possible for you to tak e this matter up with the local body concerned or the Highways Board, and endeavour to arrange for the deviation to he opened for traffic as soon as possible?”

This morning a telegraphed reply cam e reading: "Deviation now open.” This means that the bad piece of road at this point is now a thing of the past. The only matter in the district now requiring attention is the flooding of the road through Mangatawhiri Valley, and Mr Miller has made representations to the A.A.A. on this matter.
