STATUS OF HIGH SCHOOL

COMMENTS BY BOARD. RAISING OF STANDARDS. At the meeting of tlie High School Board yesterday exception was taken by the 'headmaster. Mr. W. H. Hoult, M.A.; to the Press report of the Board's last meeting, which made it appear, that in pressing for the raising of the'school status to junior University standard) dissatisfaction had been expressed with the record results 0/ last rear's work.

It was pointed out by the chairman that the Board was neither responsible for the Press reports of its meetings, nor for the* construction the staff might put- upon them. If. however, the staff had felt aggrieved over the report.-it was the dfity of the headmaster immediately to have made enquiry from the chairman. Mr. Donovan, who had previously introduced the matter of raising the academic standard of the school, explained that the excellent results of the past year were responsible for the Board's wishes that even greater achievements might he placed within reach of its scholars, and although numerically the Thames Hiidi School was far behind most of the secondary schools of the Dominion the capabilities of its staff and the high standard gained by its scholars in public examinations, warranted the* Board in hoping for results fully equal to those of any secondary institution.

(As the account of the meeting published in the "Thames Star" of that particular matter was a transcription of the official minute, it is evident that some other organ was referred to. in the connection.—Ed. "Star.")
