ANTI-HOME BREW FIGHT. / ■* The chief of the Soviet police, Kiseleff, interviewed regarding the first month of the intensified campaign against home-brewed liquor in country districts, summarised the results as follows:-^; • "In 20 provinces, '48,000 people were fined a total of 707,000 roubles. Eleven thousand six hundred arid sixty distilling machines were seized." Kiseleff declared that the police occasionally went too far, as when they detained a number of peasants some hours in the Krasnodar district searching- their carts, thereby creating considerable local irritation/ In the Novosibirsk district, Siberia, they committed the opposite fault of showing too great leniency towards lawbreakers. However, he. stated, as a general rule, the campaign goes on energetically and is successful.
