SULKY AND SADDLE.

SATURDAY'S TROTTING. IN THE BIRD-CAGE. NOTES BY "MISERE." Nelson Tasker's forward running in the Cup was freely anticipated by his connections, and they benefited -accordingly. When Peter Grattan turned sideways in the start of the Cup he completely blocked the favourite, Dundas Boy, who was fully 100 yards behind the leaders before he got away. He struck trouble round the back, too, and these two mishaps cost him the race. Rosie Thorpe r was one of the unlucky ones. At the river end in the Puriri Handicap she hit' a rough pjUch on the outer when moving up- fast, stumbled and nearly fell. She finished on well, but was thrown out of her stride. ' . Boston Chimes struck himself in his preliminary in the first division of the Hikutaia Handicap, and could not do himself justice. He will keep. Horizon did not get too good a x-un in the Puriri mile, but nearly made amends when he dead-heated for second place in the Turua. He is a fit horse. . . . ' * Tamerlane carried the public's money —£47B of it. Probably he will do better at Hawera, where, the stake is £4.00 and a gold cup.\ . Lady Joan looked rough, but she is improving, and will catch a stake soon. She is mUch better than she looks. ( Petulant was a fancy in the mile saddle, but is a bit big for that type of race, and will do better up north. Beauty Spot did not seem too happy. She' has her. off days, and Saturday was one of them, apparently. Jewel Wave went well in the unhoppled' two-mile President's Handi-* capi but a skip put her adrift, and though she did not lose much groundshe failed to settle down properly again. If she keeps down she will be hard to head off. Peter Tracey will be worth watching the next time he goes out in a 1&tniler. ' '' :; , / j Concertina, as "Misere" said, is in and out. He was well in on Saturday, and won with ease each time. He is now in the 2.19 lot, having improved his mile time by 3secs. It is his turn to be out for a while. Carberley shaped well, and when he As a bit older (he is only four years old) will take a few nice stakes for "Togo" Lee. " Etta Cole was never in the picture. She wants everything in her favour, and the big fields were a bit against the 3-year-old Peterwah—Lady Cole I filly. • * ' ' Though Gold SOund has not done much for 12 months he got into the money • in the Kerepeehi Handicap, and will land a few chips for Owner Donahoe. -'-'•' Joy Bird was never sighted in the Turua Handicap. The public sent her out favourite, but she did not seem to be hitting the straps too well. Every time Floraline wins his backers collect a nice dividend • off the Plorizel gelding. If Roma Bingen had not put in a skip in the straight the verdict w oul d have been the other way, since Floraline, though h© made a sharp spurt, was -behind again just after the post was passed. He just lasted long enough. , Peter'Pirate showed a bit of speed. He is only a three-year-old, and 'will bear watching. Haeranga Pai is the. first of the Happy Voyage progeny to race up north, and was sent out favourite in the Kerepeehi Handicap. She is good, and the "dead spit" of her sire. Sprinting will probably be her forte for a year'or two. ■ ■' Sebisca is an honest""sort that keeps pegging away without the .best of luck. In neither race""did he get the hest of the running but one Of these days his turn will come. Steve Vella's mare, Elego, is a likelylooking sort, and will be worth following. The colours are a dream — Saxe blue, cream sleeves and collar, gold epaulettes, saxe blue cap, white peak—it reads like a description of a lady's evening dress. Geo. Webb has got a good-looker in Wild Downs. He was not by any means a public fancy, but one of these days he will come in when the class is not too select. The Castaway gelding, Salesman, did not look too well, and went a bit gingerly in his preliminary. : He likes the sting out 6f the ground, and with plenty of mud he will be hard. Dundas Boy had his chances spoilt, and it will be interesting to see how he gets on in the West Coast circuit— Wanganui. Hawera and New Plymouth. He should collect at least one race on the circuit. j Van Rich ran quite a decent race for one and three-quarter miles in the Cup, but -weakened and finished behind the placed horses. Gold Dial should run better next time out. She was not feeding too' well, and that interfered with &*r prospects. It was left for a disappointed punter to remark that there were a sight more "stiffs" on the course than on the hill behind it!
