POTATOES.
PRICES AT A LOW EBB. THE MARKET- FLOODED. 5 The prices for potatoes and onions ruling locally are on an exceptionally low ebb at present (says the Pukekohe Times). The other day potatoes were only worth £5/10/-, and onions £9/10/per ton, to dispose of to the local merchants. It must naturally be concluded that the enormous' tonnage of potatoes now being dug would result in a temporary slump, due perhaps to the main crops from districts which are not in the early-growing area, together with the local tubers, flooding the markets. | On the contrary, onions are undoubtedly scarce, and the export channels were closed lately for that reason. When reviewing the whole position, the decrease in the price' of potatoes is really warranted, but onions should be worth a minimum of £l2 per ton, as the Pukekohe district is the only one worth speaking of that is exporting this commodity at the present time. On the average, most of the samples of local produce are quite good, but upon making a close inspection recently it came under the notice of a Times representative that there were many indifferent lines being offered for sale also, and certainly this must attribute towards the low ruling prices, especially as regards potatoes.
