ARBITRATION COURT.
WORKERS’ REPRESEN TATIVE,
CITY COUNCIL VACANCY
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 11. The ballot for the position of workers’ representative on the Court of Arbitration closed at noon yesterday, 'but no official announcement will be made as to the result immediately, as the appointment is one which has to be made by His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General on the advice of the Minister. . It Was stated (quite unofficially) to a Times reporter that Mr Monteith had been elected to the position. In the event of Mr A. L. Monteith being appointed and his new duties ■taking him away from Wellington to such an extent that he will be unable to attend to his duties as a. city councillor, he may resign from the council, and in that case a full and formal election to fill the vacancy will be necessary. When a vacancy occurs within three months of the date of the usual biennial election of Mayor and councillors, a. formal election is not always necessary, but in this case there is a •full year of the council’s life to run.
There is some talk in Labour circles that Mr C. H. Chapman, who unsuccessfully contested ’the Mayoralty at the last rtiunicipal election, and Avho was formerly on the council, may be •selected to contest the vacancy Avliich will be ’ created if Mr Monteith resigns.
