OBITUARY.
MR. J. L. WALTON. The death occurred last night of oneof Thames oldest and most-respected residents, in the person of Mr. Joseph Lewis Walton, in his 77th year. The late Mr. Walton was horn at Thurlstone, Yorkshire, and came to New Zealand with his parents in tlio ship Empress in 1865. The family fortunes at once prospered on arrival at tho Goldfields, Mr. Walton, Sem-.,..later establishing a store in the vicinity of what is known os Block 27, Thames. This was successfully managed by Mr. Walton, Senr., until his death in 1875. when it was carried on by the deceased, until, liis retirement from business 20 years ago. The late Mr. Walton was one of the earliest members of the Thames County Council, and lias been prominently connected with many local organisations. He was a J.P. for 30 years, trustee for the Thames Building Society, trustee for the Thames Methodist Church, and was an active member of the Thames Bowling Club to within a year of his death. He is survived by four sons and a daughter, Mrs. W. F. Burns, of Carcoar, New South Wales. The sons are Mr. J. L. Walton, of Horsham, Sussex (England), Dr. C. C. Walton, Georgetown, British Guiana, Mr. H. B. Walton, Ivailiere, and Mr. Ernest Walton, Clerk to the Hauraki Plains County Council. The funeral will leave the hospital at 2 p.m. to morrow, for the Shortland Cemetery.
