HAURAKI AND HORAHIA BOARDS

POINTS AT ISSUE. CONFERENCE AT LAST. At the last meeting of the Horahia Drainage Board, the Hauraki Drainage Board, following on a long correspondence, asked what compensation they might expect from the Horahia Board for the use and maintenance of certain drains under their (Hauraki Board) jurdiction. , The position, put briefly, is that the Hauraki Board installed and completed a drainage system at a cost of approximately £10,500. This Board has functioned for eight years, and is composed of farmers with first-hand and practical knowledge of drainage problems. The Horahia Board came into existence a year ago, and now finds that certain of its areas must be drained through the Hauraki Board’s area. This lias brought about protracted discussions and debates. Amalgamation has been suggested, but preliminary conferences have failed to eventuate, and little real progress lias been accomplished. Contentious issues have been the basis of payment for the use of the Hauraki Board’s drains, and the creation of additional dual drains. The following reply from the Horahia Board, re compensation, was read at yesterday’s meeting of the Hauraki Board:— “In reply to yours of September 30th, I am instructed to inform you that the estimates sent contained all the information asked for. The amount of money proposed to he spent by the Horahia Board in the Hauraki Board’s area must surely be regarded as credit given to your Board in connection with the construction of drains suggested. The credit given can he stated accurately, hv subtracting the amount the Hauraki Board is asked to contribute from the total estimated cost, as well as an annual maintenance sum from the Horahia Board. In view of these facts, T should be glad if the Hauraki Board would be prepared to now discuss the suggestions made, in concrete form, so that a date could b.e arranged in the near future for a conference to come to some decision on the issues involved.” After consideration of the letter, in committee, the following resolution was unanimously carried : “That the Hauraki Board will be pleased to meet the Horahia Board in conference at the Turua Buildings on Saturday, November 7th, at 10 a.m.”
