AMATEUR THEATRICALS.

It is pleasing to see the young men of Thames aiming for a higher standard of education than that usually followed. We allude to the wishes expressed in an open letter, published yesterday, -asking for support for an amateur theatrical society proposed to be formed at Thames. The desire for education and refinement finds outlet in many ways. One of the most praiseworthy is by studying plays. This is followed by the ambition to share the knowledge so gained, with the public and to exhibit the works of writers in all their humour or pathos as the case may be. There should ibe no trouble whatever in obtaining the desired 150 members to support such a society in a town like Thames. That there is undoubtedly latent talent has been shown time and again. We understand 'the players that recently staged “Nothing But the Truth” had to expend some £7O in its .production, and had unforeseen circumstances occurred they may have met with financial loss. It is felt that a capable committee should be formed to carry out the arrangements for such productions, and no doubt a committee will be available upon the formation of a

Theatrical Society. Naturally, the latter is dependent on the measure of public support forthcoming. This will be gauged by the attendance at the meeting called for Monday evening next, at the Mackay Street schoolroom. We hope that the project will meet with the support it deserves.
