MEETING AT HAWERA. • AUSTRALIANS OUTCLASSED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HAWERA, Feb. 26.
The visiting Australian athletes appeared at the electric light carnival here last night. The track was damp with dew and slightly heavy. Both sprinters were handicapped out :>£ tiio 100yds., which was won in 10 2/ssecs., but Grehan ran a great race to win tna 220yds., wherein he was coneed,ng 22 yards, by 4 feet. His time was 23 2/5.
In the half-mile Whyte (scr.) war beaten by a dozen yards by Hunter (New Plymouth) off 50yds., in 1.40 2/6.
From scratch in the mile ITy.le ran a magnificently judged race, catching and passing the leaders at the entrance to the straight, but Bailey (140yds.) then challenged the Australian, and fighting in the final saw the local man win by a foot. Time, 4.30 3/5 Burness fell in the half-mile cycle, and did not start in the mile; he could not get up in the two miles. Australia romped home from the West Coast centre in the medley reiav.
