THE MATATOKI QUARRY.

(To the Editor.) Sir.—l was pleased to see your report of the special meeting of the Thames County Council. Well, sir, first we had a consulting engineer, then we had a surveyor, then an engineer and an assistant engineer, then more surveyors, and we have spent £7OOO so far. There is nothing done here to show for one-third of the money, and .1 am on the ground every day. By the. report .1 see Cr. Cribb moved that the present site be adopted. That is common sense. Cr. Cox hoped the Council would consider the larger scheme and a commercial scheme, and suggested the matter he deferred for a month so that the councillors could have more time to consider it. The councillors have been considering this matter for over a year, hut Cr. Cox wants another month to put the finishing touch on it; then Cr. Alley put in a bit of satire. He said the quarry committee were experts; but in wlmt he didn't say. Cr. Cox moved an amendment that the matter lie deferred for a fortnight, the Engineer to take into consideration the No. 4 scheme, which includes erecting the plant at the station. I can assure the chairman if he goes to the ratepayers now with another loan proposal eight out of ten will turn it down. If the work that can bp done now, such as putting down the tram, finishing the bridges, fencing. etc., are pushed on, and the ratepayers can see that there is a fair prospect of getting metal on the roads and that the quarry will be a going coneem, they will see to it that the .£IO,OOO is not left lying up the Matatnki creek. Before going to the ratepayers for another loan there should be a circular printed by the Council, and every ratepayer should have a circular sent them, setting out clearly how the loan money was spent. That is only what we are entitled to, as wo, shoulder the burden. However, the ratepayers are applauding Cr. Cribb for bis resolution to adopt the present site, and also the councillors who voted with him. I am, etc.. A. K. MAXWELL. Mai at oki.
