CHESS CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Thames Chess Club was hold in the chess rooms last Wednesday evening, and judging from the new people present and the very large attendance of players, this year promises to be a successful one in the annals of the Chess Club. The president (Mr Win. Townson) occupied the chair. The balance-sheet was read and adopted. The election of officers for the year resulted in Mr S. Bishop being elected president. Mr Townson, in vacating the chair for the new president, said the club could not have made a better choice, as Mr Bishop was a great enthusiast at chess, and was really the originator of the club. He also spoke in glowing terms of the work done by the secretary.
The vice-presidents elected were: Messrs. E. H. Claxton, A. Court, E. .J. Renshaw, W. Danby, E. X. Miller, and (!. Cullen. A committee was elected to consist of the president, Messrs. Townson, Donovan, Birch, Fearn and the secretary. Mr W. 11. Renshaw was re-elected secretary.
Last season, two telegraphic matches were played with Te Aroha, Thames being victorious on both occasions. It was decided to go further afield this year and try and arrange telegraphic matches with Hamilton and Auckland. Three handicap) chess tournaments were held during the year, and were won respectively by Mr ,J. Parkinson, Mr Win. Townson, and Mr G. Pay]. Trophies were presented in the last two tournaments, Mr Wm. > Townson being - the winner of the handsome tray kindly presented to the club by Mr L. Wells, and Mr G. Paul won the electro-plated teapot, presented by the club. There are rumours this year of a silver cup being presented to the club, and if such is the case the trophy will be greatly coveted by all players. A vote of thanks to the chairman and a few remarks on the capable manner the retiring chairman had fulfilled his duties during his term of two years, concluded the meeting.
