RIVER BOARD RATING.

AN INTERESTING CASE. (Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 23. A case of great interest to river board ratepayers throughout New Zealand commenced in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, the occassion being the hearing of over 200 objections to a rating classification scheme of the River Board jurisdiction over the greater part’of the Wairua plain including Blenheim, more especially as it effects the higher areas which were recently added to the board’s district. A curious feature of the case is that the Board’s rating for last year was invalid because it failed to classify according to the statute and a, clause in the Finance Bill just passed in the House validates that rating despite petitions to the Minister and notwithstanding that the hearing of the objections are pending this legalising of the Board’s action m rating the new areas without representation for a period when these were not under the Board’s jurisdiction.
