A MENTAL DEFECTIVE.

MAORI COMMITTED TO ASYLUM A Maori named Kani Tepuki was arrested by the police yesterday at Wakatiwai. Th Maori ■ had been chopping down fences and threatening a relative with an axe. Two Constables brought him to Thames where he was medically examined by Drs. Liggins and Derrick who certified that he was a mental defective. He was brought before two Justices this morning who committed him to Avondale Asylum. The man came originally from Tuakaii where he was known to be eccentric. When the police visited Wakatiwi they found the place deserted and Ivni by himself. V hen he was ’questioned it was noticed he was peculiar and the arrest was made. The Maoris then came flocking in from all directions and in spite of their countryman’s behaviour rather resented Ins being taken away.
