LATE ARCHDEACON CALDER.

AN APPRECIATION. (By E.V.S.) “Did not our heart buru within us, as he talked with us by the way.” These words express the spirit of uplift which characterised the assocation of the writer with our late friend. It was in the years between 1890 and 1900 that residence in All Saints Parish,, Ponsonby, brought ns together. Since those days one has travelled far through this fair country but never to come across just such anolther man as the late Archdeacon. The influence of association with the courageous character of William Calder has earried its message in temptation and remained an inspiration to to right living to the present day. His was a high-toned life. His candid" speech and straightforwrd' actions never left men and women in doubt. His probable opinion on any subject was a touchstone upon -which decisions were made. “What will the parson say” was the conscious test of thought and word to many a one. Unsparing of his physical powers, he moved about his wide parish, and was welcomed everywhere. Such a vigour of life and cheeriness was his, that pessimism was driven away. His theology could transmute the deep thought of Westcott and Lightfoot into the coin of practical living. What a teacher of the young he, was. Who that was privileged to be there can forget those Sundays when brigade cataehising took place; the rapt attention of scholars, the devout conduct of young and old alike, the lightning like effect with which the truth was driven home. For all he had the word of svnfpathy and hope and many there be will cherish his memory in the years to come. “He, being dead, yet speaketh.”
