PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, August 21. (Press Association?. The Legislative Council sat at 30 p.lll. to-day. In committee on the Public Works Amendment Bill an amendment was moved respecting drains on railway land which has the effect of leaving the maintenance of the water channels to the department and the sewers to the local authority. The bill was passed and the council rose at 3 5 p.m. THE HOUSE. - The House was engaged during the whole of its sitting considering the Land and Income Tax (annual) Bill and Stamp Duties Bill. In connection with the former Mr Massey announced that the proposed new debenture tax would be taken out of the bill and dealt with in the Finance Bill. The Bill was passed without amendment. The Stamp Duties Bill which reduced the stakes on horse owners from 10 per cent to 5 per cent in spite of strenuous opposition by the Labour party was passed. The Finance Bill was introduced by Governor’s measure and the “Washing UP” Bill was introduced and read the first time. The House rose at 1 45 a.m.
