LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. (Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October- 4. The Legislative Council met today at 2.30 p.m. The State Advances Amendment Bill was put through its final stage 1 * and passed without amendment. * In reply to criticism of the Government’s railway policy Sir William Fraser stated that the railways had not been built for profit, but to.assist the settlement of the country, and in this direction the policy , justified the results. I The Council rose at 5 p.m. ; HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.' In the House the Paeroa Water Supply Validation Bill was introduced and read a first time on the motion of Mr H. Poland. * The following Bills were put through the committee stage, read a third time and passed: State File Insurance Amendment, Post and Telegraph Amendment, Coal Mines Amendment. The Electric Power Boards Amendment was advanced a stage in committee, when progress \Vas reported on the motion of the Minister of Public Works. i The Prime Minister moved the second reading of the Amendmefit I Tax Bill, which was agreed to, and the House rose at .11.25 a.m.
