Mr. Beach, wireless operator on the Ruapehu, is at present visiting Thames. He is the guest of Mr. Whitehead.
A Wellington telegram states tliat the Hon. Downie Stewart, Minister of Customs, sails for Australia on March 3, for the purpose of negotiating a reciprocal Customs tariff with the Commonwealth. Any agreement reached will be subject to ratification by Parliament. The Rev. Grainger Hargreaves, who is announced to preach in the Methodist Church to-morrow, and to lecture on Monday evening, is the English delegate appointed by the British Conference to take part in the Hew Zealand Methodist centenary celebrations. He is at present chairman of the Oxford district, a most important and responsible position. Mr. Hargreaves entered the ministry m 1878, and was for many ■years a missionary to China. Later he visited Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada, to study and report on various aspects of the Chinese emigration question. He is the author of “A Four-Character Classic in Chinese,” and other books, and has the reputation of being a pleasant and forceful speaker.
