BOWLING.

LOCAL TOURNAMENT. The Thames Glub has decided to hold a local-tournament on Monday and Tuesday, and entries will close to-morrow. With such a large mynber of enthusiasts there should be a good entry, and some keenlycontested games. The entries for the Dominion tournament must be considered very satisfactory. There is a considerable drop in the rinks, compared with the number of entries at last year's tournament in Wellington —110 as against 160, but. the entries for the pairs (208) and the singles (189) are much in excess of those recorded last year. A few more entries will be accepted for the singles, in order to bring the total up to 198, enabling 11 greens to be filled. The competitors hail from all parts of the Dominion, the four centres being strongly represented. A sensational ending to a challenge game took place at Wangaui last week, when a Waverley team played Westbourne (holders). At the 20th head the score was: Waverley 21, Westbourne 14. Things looked worse than glum for the seaside team, and, when the Westbourne lead put his first bowl into the ditch it seemed as if the end of things had come. However, the Waverley team, who had been playing a good, steady game all day," simply could not do anything right, and, amidst loud applause, Skipper Tom Nixon put 'up his last bowl, an it was found that every one of the Westbourne bowls was a counter, and the game ended 21 all, which still leaves the Hurn Cup in the possession of Westbourne. The tournament at Hamilton will •commence on January 31; and the indications are that it will be a greater success than ever this year. The local fixture so fits in that players can finish there, and then go on to the first tournament at Rotorua.
