WOMEN'S NATIONAL RESERVE.

THAMES BRANCH.

RENEWED ACTIVITY.

The local branch of the Women's National Reserve has resumed its useful work, and as a result two comfortable seats are .to be, .placed on the roads to Tararu and Parawai, for the benefit of tired mothers who find the walk into the town a little trying. '

During the war the Reserve did much useful work, sewing for the No. 1 General Hospital and the Red Cross, and earning quite a reputation for the quality of the goods turned out. It carried on its activities after hostilities had ceased, and returned soldiers, on leaving the local hospital, took with them useful garments made by the branch. During the epidemic the members made large numbers of pneumonia jackets, working hard to" meet the demand. '■ When funds ran short, the people of Thames assisted them, and a • small charge* was made for the jackets. Some members went nursing, and others cooked and did what they could to help the town in a time of emergency.

When the men returned from the front, the members assisted the Patriotic Society to provide rest rooms, and for nearly three years they sent consignments of cake to the soldiers' institutes at Rotorua.

This morning a Star reporter asked the president, Mrs. E. M. Adams, what the branch now intended to do.

Mrs. Adams said that the provision of two seats was the first thing the branch had done for the town, and it hoped to do much more. Through it, it was hoped, the women of Thames would be able to take an interest in civic affairs, especially movements that aimed at improving the town. The work of the Beautifying Society appealed to them. Anything that would improve the appearance of Thames was- a work in which the branch could take a keen interest. They hoped, with the renewed activity, to develop a very strong branch, and would study how they could best help Thames.
