I The Thames Count}' Council is meeting to-day. An electric storm passed to the westward of Thames between 10 and II o’clock last night. There were some vivid flashes of lightning, but the thunder was distant.

At its last meeting, the Harbour Board decided to offer the Whakatane Harbour Board £4OO for certain plant. A telegraphed reply read: — “Letter received. Presume'your offer should have been £1400.”

At Wellington yesterday a thirdclass passenger named John McEntyre, who was proceeding from Sydney to San Francisco by the Tahiti, was not given a permit to land as he refused to take the oath of allegiance. McEntyre is an Irishman, and did not ask for a permit.

The work of laying a big water main along Maekay Street to the Jiispital is being pushed on. It will be necessary to break 'through the upper part of the' concrete culvert over the Karaka Creek.
