SALE OF DISEASED FOWLS
—-♦ — AUCKLAND, December 6 A position affecting! public / health, which merits some attention from the authorities, was brought before the Police Court to-diay by Inspector Alder, of the Society for the Prevention' of Cruelty to Animals. Mr. Alder stated that he was making a test case -by charging with' crueljty ai poultry-keeper who had sent fowls to the city for sale when three of them were suffering! 'from an ailment which had advanced , to such a. state that the birds were gangrenous, and should have been ikMed. He) had been moved;
to make representations on the subject to the Hon. A. M. Myers, urging that there; should be a regular inspection of poultry soldi publicly, and likely to be used for human, consumption. In. this case he conceded that the man who sent the consignment of poultry forward wap a new hand at poultry-keeping, and wa,s probably not aware that three of the birds were ( egg-bound, and toimequentily suffering from mortification, but he desired' to have the I circumstances brought prominently before the public and poultry -keepers generally. Two experts and Dr. Hughes, whose attention had been drawn to the birds, gave' evidence as to their state. Ilk Worship stated that hi this case the most serious aspect was the possible menace to public health by the unrestricted sale of diseased poultry.
