OUR CHURCHES.

BAPTIST AND CONGREGATIONAL

ROLL OF HONOUR UNVEILED

The hailstorm shortly beforo: 11 yesterday ■ did not: appreciably affect, the attendance at the Mary Street church, where the service was of a specially interesting nature- by reason of the unveiling of the Roll of Honour.

In performing this ceremony, Key. W. Wallace said it was at once a privilege and a pleasure, for ho was proud that the church had sent its quota of modern Crusaders .He did not hesitate to say that war, Avhich-iii it-self was indescribably bad, could, from the Christian standpoint, bo justified when waged in such a cause and for such reasons as now. He took advantage of the opportunity to correct the common impression that the first' duty of a soldier was to take life. His-first duty was to offer his.life for nis country, and that Roll not onlyplaced on record the sacrifice which their young men had made, but reminded those who remained behind perforce, of their paramount duty to pray daily for each and all of them. .

The Roll, which had been designed by Mr W. J. Hosking, who is to be highly complimented 4nereonJ con' tains the names of Messrs C. Hudson (wounded), A. Hudson, M. Grigg, K. Driver, C. White-house, E. Moorman, S. Wood (wounded), W. and C. Curham (wounded), L. Anderson, A. Turner, R. Lee, to which are to be added L. A. Johnson, A. and R. Jen-, kin, also of Messrs H. Moorman and H. Driver, munition workers. The rev. gentleman's sermon dealt with the Rest of Faith. At night he drew useful lessons from the story of the apostasy of Joash.

The planet Jupiter, which is visible in the north-east shortly after sunset, will be at its nearest approach to the earth at 1.30 p.an. on Tuesday, a position it attains once every twelve, years. Any ordinary opera-glass will show its four moons, while .a telescope magnifying 12 diameters will show the disc of the planet.

Some days- ago the members, of the artillery unit at the Featherston Camp were invited to join the infantry. Only two responded. A ballot was taken, and two hundred men were drawn from *tho artillery and drafted into ,the infantry units. This resulted in a somewhat unique demonstration. The artillerymen held a mock funeral. A procession was formed, iheaded by a couple of pipers, who played''a mournful funeral dirge. A stretcher bore a prostrate artilleryman, with his arms crossed over his breast, and bis hat placed upon them. Following the stretcher was a squad of (twelve men with reversed arms. Then came another stretcher, on which was born the belt, bandolier, and puggaree of an artilleryman, followed by the artillery unit of the camp. The demonstration is said to have been very impressive while it lasted. It was described by those concerned as "the death of tine artillery. "—Wairarapa Age.
