: • The Underground "bosses" in the crosscut' at the 1000 ft level are preferring a request for an increase in wages. At present they are receiving 11s p:er day and the request is for an increase to 12s. Seeing that thoso 'appoinjtod aye miners of many years' .experience and have to accept considerable responsibility, and rememtoerkig also that the cost of living has steadily increased, the request, to our mind, appears a fair and reasonable one and will, we hope, bo granted by the Board. Mining as an industry is worthy of every encouragement, but it should not."be fostered at the expense of either; miner, Tjnderground bosses, or managers. ; The wages paid on the field are riot'too high, but the positions of the various mining companies are such that any substantial increase would cripple .the majority. In the present case the number of men concerned is small and under the circumstances the.'Board may—and^ we hope will— Jbe "disposed to grant"the request.
