THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL

TQ-DAY'iS MEIETING.

The Thames County Council met to-day, the meetir^ being attended by Mr Ri. W. Bugnall (chairman) and Crs. T. A, Coopioi', S. Bax, J. Mc^ormiok, W. B'aiker, Ri. Law, Al. Adams, and W. Deeble. The Clerk (Mr W. S. Clarki) and Engineer (Mr R\ H. Muir) were also in attendance.

—Board of Works.— The Beard of Works Committee aret and adopted the monthly report, which was most satisfactory as to the comprehensive Work done, and also as 10 finance, and the minuitea of the last board of works meet—Minutes.— The minutes of the Council's last ordinary meeting were read by the clerk and confirmed. —Outwlard Correspondence.—■ Tito outward correspondence was also read and confirmed. —Puriri-Hikuai .Road.—<■ A largely signed petition from Ta*'rua residents was received bringing under the Council's notice the urgent necessity of bringing under control the continuation of the main Puriri-Hikuai road. The part of the road at present under Lhe Council's control ends abruptly at the bound aiy of Messrs Faithful and MdC'onuell'a property, whence to tho hotel, poat office, store, and butchery, the owners harv'e tobstructed anct maintained a road. As the road is in continual use by the travelling and local public, the ratepayers desire the" Coundil to take it over and miaintain it as part of the Council's property, the owners of the section in question being prepared ho deal with the Council in a, most liberal mianner. Ci\ Deeble moved the petition be laid piin tilie table until next rneeting and legal advice bo obtained a*> to the Council's liability in taking over the road, and a luoid explanation be given at next meeting. Set*onded by Or. Baker and earned. —Road at Tairua.— The Counoil's attention was drawn by Mr F. Tooman to the state of the filling near the Sir Geo. Grey Hotel, thus preventing the children from attending school. The filling is being rapidly broken up and being washed away, and he would like the Counoil to consider it. The .Engineer reported tha matter was being attended to. —Road at TapiuJ— A petition from residents of Hastings township drew th'e Council's attention to the road in the township, it being the worst on the Thnmies to Waikawau road, and asking the Council to order metal to spread on the worsti parts. Ci*. Peeble sead the road h*d been much cut ui" and moved the request be granted. Other epunpilloirs thought the road needed repairing. S^eondgd «nd dallied. • —Rood to Mine.—■ Ei. McGregor and Sons, who have taken a tribute in the Good Hope mine and haive gone to much expense iu erecting a wire tramline, wrote asking the Council to put in repair the road leading from the tram line to the battery. Engineer bias reported on the matter. —Franklin Street.—■ Ratepayers, resident in the above street, petitioned the Council re its state, particularly between Sandes and Augustus streets. Carters constantly complain of this road, which if not repaired will be unsafe for vehicles. •

At present it crosses Augustas street at the foot of Hnuiaki Terrace, thence along the front of Messrs Reid, Bateau an and Battson's property, and thence between Messsve Battson and Wemharn/'s properties, and the petitioners were of opinion tha,t by diverting the water in a more direct route to the river, this overflowing into properties could be obviated, as at present the sharp tralrns at the point of divergement from the mjain road allow it." Millar, of Puriri, -wrote drawing attention to the road passing hi a door, and asked the Council to fill it in. and erect a culvert so that a horse and cart Can get in s.nd out, the cost being about £2. Mr Millar 'Was willing to do it himself or the Ceunoil could let it to some one else.

Bax moved 'thle Ebginee.r report on the matter. —Road at Furiri.—« Pastor Clark drew attention to the i oad between the bridge and the Springs gate, water flowing across after rains and washing metal away, this being claused by the condition »f the road drain, which needs cleaning. The water is unable to get away by its finds its way oixer the road", and also on to Mr Clark's paddocks. The Council's men have recently been cutting channels to head the water from the main road on to Mi' Clark's paddocks, instead of leading it into the main drain, and the writer asked the Council to look into the matter. Or. Cooper said the pastor's complaint whs justified and the Engineer should report. The Chairman said jhe would vtisit Pviriri and, look ''■><-" Mr Clark's petition. Seconded ancl carried. ' —Omahu Rioad.— < Mr G. Claris, of Omahu, wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the O'nJahu road. Engineer to look into matter.
