FERRY AND RAILWAY.
FAEIROIA—POKEINiO AND KO'PU,
At last night's meeting of the Thames Bbrough Council it was decided to appoint a deputation consisting of the Mayor (Mir H. Liow-e), Crs. Lucas, Cla-xtou,, and MioCormick to wait r-oi the Hon. A. Myers,, Mliti&tci' of Railways, when he visits Thaimes, with a view of securing a deviation of the propioHed Plaei'oaFo'kieno railway line so as to cross tho Haurati Plains and connect at Kopu. It is submitted that this will shorten the journey to Aurikland by about 40 mile?, and as the land over which the railway will cross is more solidified than on, the route of the proposed Paeraa-Pokeno railway sutfL a sai ring will be effected as will provide for the ereieition of a, bridge at Kopu. While we think that action .in tlia direction indicated is being taken somewhat tairdily there is no doubt that a decided advantage Avbuld -be secured if the deviation >s made. The lii.fcvrtunote part of tlie afiair so far as Thjames is concerned ia that what is now proposed should ha.ye been done several years ago, when the Gihinemuri people, assisted by the member for that district, secured from the !Grovemm!ent an assurance thiat tlie Paeroa-Pokeno railAVay Would ba linlvled up with the main railway system of tibe North Island. Ota all Government plans that have been issued the railway is now shown as a proposed work. The local conditions h'aive, however, changed considerably since the Hauratki Plains wfere' settled on, and with tihe rapid cultivation of t.he valuable area, mentioned, together with the steady progress that Thames is making, it is earnestly hoped that the representations ol" the deputation will liajvta the desired effect and that full justice will be done to the, public requirements of this district.
