NORTHERN LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

HRANICIH FOIRMIEtt> AiT THAMfc'S.

At tbe Salutation Hotel last night a meeting of those intetreeed in the introduction of the Niortherni Union (llugby) garnie at Tbiaictes w'ais 1 held. Mr B. Djaeble presided, and there was a good attemdanioe. Mr Cleorge Gillett, the well-known reprtesentaltivie footbailler in both the Rugby and Northern Union game was jM-esent and addressed the •lneeitimg, explaining the advantages to be deia'\led from, the introduction of tlio game at Thames. He explainod that the game was not ai professional one, but emphasised the fact that the football players of New Zealand had swelled the coffers of thd head tabdy and provincial unions at great sacrifice to themselves, and without receiving in return thle eonsicleration that players were entitled to. He also pointed outfa that . the imprwled gam© was from a. speo taculai' point of view, a decided im>provemlent on the Riugby game in that it made tlie play faster and much more interteistiing, while the players were less liable 1 to injury o^ing to the open nature of tlie play. Mv C Rioil>eirta aha addressed the meeting expressing his approval of tho attractions of the game, which was from a spectator's point of view much more pleasant to witness than the, at times, almost brutal game existing undor the ' present R!ugby conditions. It wtola decided that a; branch League be formed a.t Thamles, and the following office-beiai'eirs wore appointed : —Patron,, Hon. A* Myers; paiesid'ent, Mr F. Cdaixton; vicie>-pi-e----sidients (about 20 avtei- 1© elected); committee, Messrs E. Deeble, Jais. TwohiU, o.' Roberts, W. Clark, T. A. Dtmlop, J. Cb-nnolly, H. Brownlee, 9. D'a'lcer. It was decided that & practice match be held on Saturday, and that on the following iStatuirday a match between a team from Gcldfielda and Thames be played. Judging from the 1 enthusiastic tone of tine mieeting, there is no rear sow why the now Union should not make good progress. During hip j-'ewiarks M)r G-. Gillett mbrtftioned ithat providing T!xame» could place a fairly strong team in tho field within a few month's there was every probability of ai New South Wales team playing our representatives at 'our town during tho forthcoming season.
