LYING TWO MOLES DEEP.
Some discussion has taken plaice at Thamles as to whether the Titainic, which sunlk in Water showing a depth of two miles, is resting on the bed of the oioean or is suspended be tween the surface and the bottom. Itfc is interesting to note that nautical experts, marine engineers, and. scientists halve been giving this matter attention, and all have stated that, thie Titanic: would not be suspended, but would sink to th« bottom. Further they say that had the Titanic any compartments wholly or partly watertight, the tremiendous pressure as shle sank deeper and deeper would cause the complete crumpling of the Vessel. This is explained by on© of the experts in the following words: "The pressure of the wawr at any depth would be equally aipplied on every part of the ship. That is, the pressure upwards would be counteracted by the pressure downwards, amd the attraction of gravity woiiild not be interfered with;. The force that will sink a. piece of iron an inch below the surface will sinik it a fathom or a mile." It seems raither unnecessary tol-ask an expert whether the Titanic could Vo salvaged, seeing that she lies at an enormous depth. However, scmie informaition on this head was secured from an. expert. He stated that no salvaging had been successfully accomplished beyond a/ depth of 200 feet, and that as the water where, the White Star liner sank was two miles deep, there would not be any possibility of success even if they had machinery with which to cope with the work.
