I ami to add thab if thetsettlers or the local body purchase the wharf there will <be no objection on the part of this Department to the transfer being made to them,-" —Harbor Master's Report—■ "The work d;uii'ingj October has been confined to* the erection of the new 'boat slip at Shortland wharf. The timber has all been coated with wormproofing, with three coats, and several sets of piles are- in position. I have had to lengthen out the slipway another two. sets, as I found when measuring out the work again with Mr Stone that Ti had planned! the slip rather too steep and a'so that m.y original platform was 100 short to allow of a sufficiently long cradle to ■carry the longer class of boats g\nd \-xV.ovf: lioonii foi* the win-ii, as well- I have been in comniunicaitiw with the traffic manager N-Z-G. railways at Morrinsville to obtain some two tons of 'Second hand 401b rails and got a reply that they could supply at £5 10si pcr 1 ton, the Board! to pay freight from Morrinsville to the Thames. I submitted the offer to the Chairman for his approval and upon his doing so I wrote accepting and asked for delivery as early as pos- | sible, so as noli to delay the work. So far I ami not in receipt of them, but expect them at any time now. There is ai space of about io feet square, at the head of the slip which will require to be filled in level with the present wharf to make room for sliding boats oil the slip when under repairs, and it will take about 250 | cubic yards of filling- I should recommend calling lenders for that quantity, more or less, as the upper portion of the slip will ba finifiihied all but laying the rails by time tenders are received- To retain this filling I shall havtei to drive a few piles in line with the outer end of the wharf a.nd plank it up, and' remove the heavy stones from their present place to the far end 1. During the .tttontjh 'I took the !qjpportun2ty to sound the river channel across where the telegraph towers used to be, and found that the Sandbank had made downwojrdsi, nac|essita, ting shiftng one of the leadng beations further down ; this, and lowering the next one closel to the ground, as it had 'become obscured by trees, growing in its neighbourhood, has been done and th.o beacons given n fresh coat of white paint- I have not. yet decided what class of cradle to place upon £ho slip, asi I want further advice upon the matter- Revenue "colled/ted in October 1: wharfage), £100 9s lOd; port charges £29 J.s 6d; :rent £8 15s; water £4; cab tall j £8 ICis; 'total, £\US 16s 4dV'—lt | was decided to Call for tenders for i 250 cubic yards of filling- as desired; ' tenders: returnable in a> fortnight
