AN IMPOSING SPECTACLE.

CHRISTCHURGH, This Day. This morning at 10.15 Their Royal Highnesses left the residence of Mr A. E. 6. Rhodes,,*a'c -which handsome placet^ they remain, during their stay in Christchulrch, and proceeded from Te Koraha to Victoria Park Square, where the children's demonstration was held. The sight was. an imposing one, the thousands of li'ctle ones being gathered together for the occasion.

The route taken wae via Carlton Mill toad, 'Park Terrace, Salisbury and Victoria streets, and all along the line of route the streets were thronged with spectators, who cheered loudly as their Royal Highnesses -were jirrven pa&'t. As the Royal carriage arrived the children sang one verse of the National Anthem. * ■ .

The demonstration was apparently greatly enjoyed, especially by the 'Duchess, and Her Royal Highness was presented with several bouquets from the Jit tie ones.

After,this ceremony'had been pompleted their Royal Highnessen proceeded via Victoria and Kilmore and Kilmore streets, Park Terrace, over the Carlton Bridge to Hagley Park, the entrance being by Riccarton road. Here thousands of spectators hadfeCongregated to witness the review of the troopß. These came from all parts of the colony. Dunedin, Auckland, and Wellington despatched various companies, and the result was thaic the review was one of the local features of the Royal visit. The troops were first inspected in line, after which they were formed into quarter column and the Duke and staff took his place at the saluting base. The troops marched round and then passed the Duke and gave,the usual salutes, His Royal Highness responding. It was a splendid turn out and the spectators cheered and cheered again as the mounted infantry, the bluejacket*, infantry and cadetß marched past. The cadets met with an enthusiastic reception. Numbers of the school cadets from Dunedin had arrived, and .as the little fellows marched past they were loudly ap-i plauded.

The march past, over the returned contingents-—-the Mounted Infantry and the Bough Riders—were inspected, after wliich the presentation of medals to the returned officers and troopers was .made. The new Zealandera were loudly applauded as they stepped forward andisomeof the officers and men who 'had performed brave deeds in South Africa and hai received promotion, were enthusiastically applauded. After .this ceremony had concluded their Royal Highnesses returned to "Te Koreha," taking a different route to that traversed as they drove to the ground. As they passed along Riccarton Road, - Oxford Terrace, Montreal and Kilmore streets,' Cranmer Square and Park Terrace, they were greeted with cheers, and atone point a party of College scholars had assembled and made a patriotic demonstration, to which their; Royal Highnesses smilingly gave recognition*

The Government entertained the veterans and returned officers and troopers at lunch at the Agricultural and Industrial Hnll after the reviewIn the evining the city will be apain illuminated.
