John darken was charged with being drunk, and was fined 5s and costs, or 24 hours' imprisonment.
INDECENT ASSAULT.
Alfred John James was charged with indecently assaulting Elizabeth Watene The case was, at the request of the., police, remanded till Monday^the 11th Bail was allowed in two sureties of £25 each, and the accused in £25, OBSCENE LANGUAGE Charles Crawford Lovatt and James Bruce Ferguson were charged with using obscene language on • board the p,s Wakatere on the 4fch March, and with assaulting Mr Thomas Marwick. Mr Miller appeared for Mr Marwick, and Mr Clendon for the defendants. . Mr Olendon made a statement of the circumstances. He admitted that although not the actual words in the indictment, yot words were used calculated to give offence. Mr Mar-, j wick had .remonstrated with his clients, and a scuffle ensued, Mr.Maiv wick being struck in the face Subsequently the lads were imprisoned on board the Wakatere. and later on in the police cells. He trusted all the circumstances would weigh with the Bench. He, on behalf of the accused, wished to" say they were prepared to apologise to Mr Marwick, to the Northern S.S Company, and all others ! hurt or insulted by their actions.
Mr Miller, representing Mr Mats wick and the N.S:S.Co., said the circumstances were as stated by Mr Clendon. He, on behalf of Mr Mar« wick, was prepared to accept an ample ap >logy, and the payment of the costs. Mia client did not care to see the accused seat to prison ..
Sergeant Clark referred to the seriousness of the crime committed by the lads before the Court, but as Mr Miller had said his client had no desire to see the lads sent; to prison ho would uot press the charge.
The .Bern h addressed some forcible and sensible remarks to the accused, entered a conviction against them, and dismissed them on payment of the costs. The cases of, assault against the same lads were withdrawn on payment of costs GUMDIGGERS WITHOUT LICENSES. Geo Bulot, Beppo Bulot, and Toney Bulot were charged with having kauri gum in their possession, and without having gum licenses. ( Mr Clendon stated the defendants were not very conversant with the laws of New Zealand, and were under the- impression that Mr Scott had taken out their licenses. The licenses had been lately taken out.
Fined 5s each and costs,
