The Chairman of the Bank of New Zealand at the recent meeting of the shareholders in Wellington said he was glad to be able to state that a considerable trade with South Africa had been opened' up in some. ot our products. Whether it would continue was more than he could say. It was probably doubtful, but circumstances would seem to point to the fact that there would be for some years to come a Held for enterprise in that country. If this wretched war could be brought to a close, and our communication placed upon a proper basis, there would be. a great opportunity for producers, and he hoped they would ta«ce advan-» tage of it. • Taking a.review.of the whole circumstances of the colony, he thought it could be said that the colony was on a more sound basis than jit ever was before. They had evidence which pointed to the fact that a great many transactions were rash transact tions which had hitherto been on a credit basis. In continuation of the ' chairman's remarks the Trade Returns . since published show that the expant sion ot ti^de during 1900 was over £3,000,000"more than in. the previous year. Imports, 18S8, £8,612,666; exports, £11,922,422; making a total or £20,537,078. For" last yearimports, £10,646,107; exports, £13,242,718; or a total of £23,888,718. The figures show £2,000,000 to the credit of imports, and £1,300,000 to exports, it is cheerful to know New Zealand is prospering, and the revenue returns to the 6 1st march we feel sure will fully justify the reductions of the Customs duties made during last session of Parliament.
