Disastrous Fire at Fielding

SEVERAL SHOPS DESTROYED.

INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED.

FEILDING, February 22.

At midnight a disastrous fire broke out in a block of business premises occupied by the New Zealand Clothing Factory, M. Lane, grocer, F. Butler boot store, Whitelav saddler. A. Williamson tailor, G. W. Fowles watchmaker, W. Grantham refreshment rooms. Thest) bedims wooden buildings were all destroyed. A brick building owned and occupied by E. Goodbeser and H. Mortensen, jeweller, was gutted. Gratham and family who lived oa the premises barely escaped with their liv<;3, and in scanty clothing.

Most of the shops -Jiot destroyed were damaged by fire and water. The bulk of this stock was removed, but was largely damaged in removal.

The fact that two incipient fires were discovered in the block last month lends color to the • suspicion that the fire is the work of an incendiary.

It as the most disastrous fire that has ever occurred here, being one of the principal blocks.
