(Jfer Press Association.) PENNY POSTAGE. WILL THE STATE GOVERNMENTS RECIPROCATE? WELLINGTON, December 30. Mr. Ward'has cabled to the Premier asking him to urge upon Australian Governments tkat there is no need for them "to wait for the Commonwealth Govern-' menfc to adopt the reciprocal rate so far as the admission of New Zealand letters at a penny is concerned. He has also cabled to the Postmasters General . and leading federalists expressing the same hope. He -says that many colonists desire to commemorate Australian Federation -by writing to their friends in Australia per penny: post; to preclude this would cause widespread disappointment, and probably the fact, would be looked on as antiFederal in spirit. He (Mr. Ward) himself proposes forwarding brief congratulatory messages on the advent of" the new cen-' tury and of the penny post to the Oov. I erne? General, -Governors, Ministers, | principal officials, and newspapers and | business men. These will be prepaid one penny only, and it would discount the •real object of the missive if the letters have to be inclosed in franked official covers to avoid surcharge. SWIMMING.
