The 1 Secretary of State has cabled as follows: "Her Majesty's Government desire to express their grateful thanks for the prompt and generous response of your Government-, to Lord Kitchener's request. Thfcjs w6ul<£ have been.glad of 'affording opportunity of active service for the Queen's Maori subjects who have so often proved their, soldierly qualities arifl courage, but political considerations peculiar to South Africa render it impossible." In consequence of this message, the Government will form both contingents strictly on the lines on which previous 'contingents were formed. - I
