During the four days ended 9 a.m. on Thursday, 2.19 inches of rain fell in Wellington. •
Government has received a cable from Sir A. Milner that Trooper Brebner, of Invercargill, who has been ill with fever, is now convalescent.
The Wellington General Post Office will be gaily illuminated on New Year's Eve in celebration of the inauguration of Uni versal penny postage in New Zealand.
At the Wellington wool sales prices all round remained on a par with the sale on the 7th insfc. Bidding- was good at this level and most of the offerings were quitted.
The powers of the Rivers Commission regarding the declaration of rivers into which mining debris may be deposited have been extended to apply to Nelson .and Westland.
An application has been made to the Government to assist in bringing about a uniform system of municipal bookkeepjing. The matter has been referred to the Col onial Secretary, who will confer with the Auditor General and the Secretary of the Treasury on tha subject.
An exciting^ incident occurred at the conclusion of the Gisbome races. A troop horse of the Mounted Rifles threw its rider and bolted amongst the crowd with the rifle swinging in the bucket. It collided with a horse ridden by a Maori, the rifle striking it in the centre of the chest, piercing the aorta, and killing it instantly.
The Cabinet Las authorised a further vote of £6000 for the North Island Main Trunk Railway. The Government has decided to grant a bonus upon condensed milk manufactured in New Zealand. Acting on advice, the Government has decided to throw open the land locked up in connection with the Midland Rail way, aa from February Ist. Some time ago tenders were called for the building of a .number of railway wagons in th'o colony. Several were re eeived, but none complied with the condi tions of rapid delivery specified. A price ha a now. been, fixed by the Railway De partment at which delivery of wagons will be accepted within months. In the meantime, the construction of rolling stock will be pushed on in the railway work shops. I
