BULLET-PROOF SHIELD.
ColoneF-Bingh'aim, of the Ist- York Engineers, Sheffield 1, has: been actively interesting himself in the bullet proof shield and rifle rest invented by Major; "Boynton, of Messrs. Charles Gammell arid; Co. (Limited), Cyclope Works, Sheffield. The shield is three millimetres thick, weighs; 71b, and is proof against the; Lee-Metford bullet ati 400 yards range. It is perfectly fiat. The idea is to carry the shields on regimental transports' as far as the transports can go, then issue shields to about 100 men who arc-to form the advanced line of the attack/Tho shield is attached by a simple but efficient catch,- to a 'specially designed "lower band".of the rifle, and gives considerable-protection to men advancing in the:}face/of a heavy fire. Colonel Bingham has decided to offer 1000 of ■ these shields to the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, to be used'by the Sheffield volunteers going to the fronjt, and the surplus to be at the disposal of the Yorkshire Volunteer Brigade of Yeomanry. , .
