The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the,,s^iames Borough. Council was. held la£t evening. Present: Crs FoyV: Clark, Poulgrain, Lucas, Trembath; and Davey. Apologiea wero, received for the absence of the Mayor-and Crs» Radford, Menzies; and Wood. CrFoy was elected to the chair.. .

Compensation Claims—T.' Maher vfrote that on; the 10th inst a horse of his put its foot through.Jabroken culvert on the Tararu road near the school, and was so much injured as to be ,of no; further, use.. Its. value was £i% which he expected the Council t6 pay^'aa th.c accident, could not have happened, had the said, .culvert, been kept iii repair"—W. Wood claimed £9 for a horse destroyed, on account of an accident at the same hole.—Both applications were referred to thefMtiance^ommitte^— The Foreman understands that a hgrse Btelongigg tp Mi; v Matier was injured''by "putting its""leg through an old unused culvert, crossing the. Tararu:road on the south, side of'the school. This occurred I believe about 6 a.m. on the 10th inst., and a little later on a horse "belonging to Mr Wood %a# injured in the same holes As soon as I was informed of the matter I had the roadvray opened up and the whole of.the culvert fiUed in solid. It was impossible to know that a culvert existed in this locality, as 1 both ends must have been covered up foi? the lasti2o yearej, but from what I can. gather the culvert waa not placed .there by the Council, but wastiised'to 1 carry off tfic water from a battery situated on ihe side of the\ roadway." Hastings', applicatibn for v in'cl'easbiii pay was ref elred' to ' the Finance Cdmmittee.—The report' of • the, Acting Foreman of Works (Mr;j Jackson) was adopted. ,• , , ; Government Subsidies.—The Un-der-Secretary of the Mines Depart: ment wrote: "In reply to your letter of the 27th' ulto., I have to^inform you that a voucher for the sum of £25 has been passed -for payment in, your favor for repairing the Waiotahi Creek bridge. The authority for clearing the 1 Karaka, Hape and'Waiotahi Creeks (£175) will be carried on to next year,? but ywith, regard to your request" that' the 'authority for £300 for metalling !gbldfields roads within the Borough may be also' continued, I would point out that the Government is-only liable fon £100 for this, work, as the authority, issued in my letter No.- 2455 of the 11th December /last, was for £200 at the rate of £' for £, on an expenditure of; £400 ; that is,=the Government to find £200 and the Borough £200, from which •was deducted the sum, of £100 for the Beach road, paid t<>"' 'the Borough Council on December 19 last.. The Borough; ;r .■...recently, recently wrote;tomtit© County^,Council stating that thei former had . re r . ceived no reply to a letter 1 addressed to the County Council relative" to holding a conferenoe,tof' the'"subject of mining debrisf "being washed down the, creeks in,to the Borough. . The County Council has replied enclosing a copy of a letter posted on January 11, which copy intimated that a committee (County Chairman Dunlopand Crs. Deeble, Otter and Taylor) had teen appointed to confer with the Borough Council. The Town Clerk stated-at. last, night's meeting that the letter had not -been; received at' the Borough Chambers,, and had evidently gone astray. The accounts were passed for payjnent. I
