THE LETTERS.

Among the things in the room two letters were found, evidently written by the woman and corrected by the man. The contents were :—" Palmers, ton North. To my dear parents and brothers and sisters. 'Tis hard to part from you, as I love each one of you dearly, but I ask you earnestly not to give way, as " what is to be will be," and reft assured that my dear wife and I will be at rest If the world should charge me with cowardice don't lose faith in me, as I have sacrificed my life for a purpose and would not bear the brunt of this world alone, knowing what trust and faith she has in me. Things may seem black in other different aspects, but still keep faith in me, as some day your faith may be strengthened. 11

The above was written in ink, apparently by a woman, and then followed an ink-pencil in the man's hand: " There are some of my things down at Palmerston station. A Family Bible is one, also two large boxes and some tools at Manawatu station, Wellington. There is one thing my dear wife desires, and that is that we both should be buried together. If it be possible bury the two of us together, one above the other. Not that Ide serve it, but do v for Mm's sake. I ask forgiveness from you all, and thank you all for what you have done I'or me, and also Willoby Knight.' Good bye. I remain, Your affectionate I Will, God bless each one of you. I am sorry for your pain.'*

The following was written on the same paper:—"To my dear wife's people, Masterton. - I hope you will forgive me for this crime. lam fully aware of the sinfillness, but I bear it bravely, together with my people, knowing we shall be at rest. It was for a good purpose, however, dark as things may look W. D McKftin."

The inquest was adjourned until today.
