Thk flag over the Harbour Board office was flying hall-mast to-day in renpect to the late Captain Fairchild, of the Government steamer TuUnekai, who accidentally met his death at Wellington yesterday, as will be seen by our telegraphio columns.

The Anniversary Social of the Baptist and Congregational Church takes place this evening in tie Mary Street Building. The chair will be taken at 7.30., and the meeting will be addressed by Sev. A. H- Collins of Auckland, and the local Ministers. The music will be funished by the choir, and tea and coffee and the refreshments will be handed round before the close of the proceedings. A collection will be made in aid of the churoh funds.

By the 8.8. Waihora, which arrived in Auckland from Sydney yesterday morning, fifty-six Auslrians arrived en route to the Northern gumfields.

The evidence disclosed that the offender had on previous occasions squirted from his mouth a quantity of tobacco juice into the eye of a little boy and plucked the feathers from a live sparrcw which he had then let go. The Bench sentenced this lover of cruelty to a pract;cal acquaintance with the pain he delights in inflicting, and ordered him to receive twelve strokes of a birch rod, at the same time expressing a hope thai the strokes would be well laid on.

Thb football matoh played on the North Shore ground on Saturday, between Newton and North Shore, had a deal of the rough element introduced into it, and towards the close of the second spell two rival players exchanged blows under the eyes of the referee and spectators. Another diversion was provided during the progress of the game, by two rival barrackers engaging in fisticuffs at the side of the dressing room on the ground, ! in the midst of a large crowd.

Thk annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute was held in the Weyesley-street Sohool on Saturday. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was deoided to request the management Committee to consider the. question of lady teachers' salaries, special attention being given to those whose certificates. a»e not high but whose work is valuable. Ysstebday evening a man named Jamea Keane was driving a four horse team along Bella street, drawing a waggon on which machinery was being conveyed from Shortland Wharf to the Queen of .Beauty works The team comprised a horse in the shafts, two in front, and a leader in front of them. In attempting to whip up the leaders, Eeane got his whip entangled in the harness, and the result ot his efforts to pull it free was that he lost his balance, and fell. The weight of the load is stated to have been as much as six tons, and the wheel passed over his left let;, below the knee, causing a compound fracture. The hand and face were also bruised as the result of contact with the road. The sufferer was conveyed aB speedily as possible to the Hospital, where it wast a certained that the fracture of the leg was tbe only serious injury, though it is a bad one. <Keane was in the employ of Mr .P. Maxwell.

On the 10th June the Chief Just'ce «f South Australia sentenced two men, Frank Athley and William Smith, to terms of imprisonment with hard labor (t.he latter, however, being released by the clemency of the Judge under the First Offenders Act) for selling counterfeit Pink Pills as the wellknowu Dr Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, and for thus obtaining money under f dse pretences. Evidenoe showed that the counterfeit Pills had been purchased by a number of persons on the faith of the prisoners' allegation. The public ivould do well to profit by thet>e facts, and to ssrutiniee carefully the goods offered when advertised medicine is asked for. We are requested to add that tli-s Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Queen's Place, Sydney, who&e Pills have been the subject of somewhat extensive substitution by retailers, and who are devoting considerable energy to the detection of that practice, will pay a reward for private iniormation leading to the conviction of offenders.

It. is expected th«t the Auckland Exhibition buildings will be completed within contract time, September 30th. The Musical and Entertainment Committee hare decided to recommend that not less than £300 be set aside for prizes in connection with the brass bands competition, and that a special committee of management 'be appointed by the executive to look after this particular department of the Exhibition. The Murioal Committee have decided that a subcommittee consisting of Messrs A. Towsey.T. Wood, J. A. Beale, J. B. M.aefarlane, be appointed to choose the orchestral music* and manage the orchestral concerts, and Herr Schmitt and Messrs Leslie Hunt, J. Phillpot, and V. E. Bice are appointed a sub-committe. to manage matters in connection with the Exhibition choir.
