A Fittar, 4 months' protection for the Waitangi licensed holding, Shellback Greek—Mr Miller, for applicant, asked for protection on the ground that the ore from the mine could not be treated by the present batter; process—The Warden intimated that he did not think section 79 of the Mining Act gave him power to grant; absolute protection for periods of four months unless during the intervening four the full number of men required under the regulations had been employed,—Mr Miller contended that so long as the licensee complied with the permission of the Court to work with leu men than the regulations required, the section would apply in the same manner as though the full number were employed.—The Warden differed from Mr Miller on this point, and said if his contention was right, a man might apply for protection for four months; then obtain permission to work with two men for four months, and at the expiration of that period get, another four months' I protection, which would mean that he could hold the ground by working with two men for four months in each year. He thought Mr Miller's better plan was to apply to the Minister for extended protection, and in order to give him an opportunity to do this, he granted permission to work with one man for two months
