The Rebellion of '98.

To (lay the Irish" centenary ot the rebellion of 1798 was commemorated locally by the Irish citizens. This morning a solemn requiem Mass was held at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the repose of the souls of those who, died in the rebellion one hundred years ago. The Irish rebellion of 1798 was a demand of the Roman Catholics and Ulster Presbyterians for political liberties long enjoyed by the Irish Protestants. More than 100,000 lives arebelieved tohavebeen sacrificed. The cost, including value of property destroyed, has been estimated at more than .£15,000,000. According to Lord Castlereagh, 137,350 troops were employed. The solemn requiem Mass was celebrated at 9 a. in. The Rev. Father Kehoe celebrated Mass, Dr. Egan being Deacon and Rev. Father Buckley ; sub - Deacon, while His Lordship * Bishop Lenihan was present at the throne. In the sanctu. ary were the Bey. Fathers Gallagher, Brodie, and Croke. There was a full choir present under Mr Hiraocks. At St. Patrick's Cathedral ikstriiglii Bis Lordship spoke on patriotism it general, and he referred to the Irish rebellion and its cause. To night a commemorative gathering took place in St. Benedict's Hall, c splendid proKramm'e being gone through. Bishop Lenihan delivered an address, and Key. Father Kehoe sang " The memory of the ddad."
