Auckland, August 12. g The news of the death of Mrs Mary S. Aldis, the wife of Mr William bteadmau Aldis, sometime professor ©f mathematics in the Auckland University College, was received by the mail yesterday. During her residence in Auckland, the deceased lady took a prominent part in various controversies on social subjects, and although her views were often unpopular, and sometimes expressed in language which was apt to provoke resentment, there could be no doubt as to her sincerity, courage, and ability. A very pleasing little incident took place yesterday afternoon in theßeres-ford-street school, when a presentation was made to Mr F. J. Ohlsen, one of the teachers in the school, by the girls who passed in the sixth standard. The present consisted of a handsome pocketbook and purse in one piece and a Fountain pen. Mr Ohlsen replied, thanking the young donors for their kind thoughtfulness. Every girl and boy, without exception- some 36 pupils, under Mr Ohlsen's teachership m the sixth standard passed in the late examination.
