The Assassination of Senor Canovas.
SIMPLY OBEYING AN ORDER. THE MURDERERS STATEMENT, (Per Press Association.) Madrid, August 9. Golli, who was twenty-six years of age, declares he had no grudge against the deceased patriot, but was simply obeying an order of his superior. When he was approached by Senora Canovas, the widow of the dead man, (Soil! answered, " I have done ray duty and avenged the tortures inflicted upon my friends and brethren in the fortress."
Golli had recently been in prisen in Italy for revolutionary writings, but succeeded in escaping. The body of Canovas was embalmed and brought to Madrid with the honor usually accorded to a Field-Marshall who is killed in battle.
Queen Victoria has telegraphed her] sympathy to the Queen Regent. Madeid, August 10. After Golli had shot Premiei Canovas the latter struck the assassin in the face, and ran, exclaiming "assassin." ■;'■
Golli mockingly bowed, remarking that he was avenging the Barcelona Anarchists and his crime was not an act of assassination.
Alter saluting thi Premier Golli firoi twice at the bystanders, who seized and disarmed him.
Golli declares he is ready to die; his only regret is for the sorrow which the crime will cause his father.
He asserts that he purchased the revolver in London;
