ALBURNIA EAST.

Steady progress continues to be made with the advancement of the drive upon the north bearing of the Vale of Avoca reef, and a lengta of 45 feet has been driven in this direction from the crosscut- Unfortunately a poor table of country has been met with, but latterly there is strong cvi- j dence of an improvement, which may i come in at any foot of driving. The reef, it is pleasiug to notice, has thickened out to three feet fully, composed of solid quartz thickly interspersed with silica""(a most promising indication). The ore also contains a splendid class of mineral, but no gold has been seen, This is, in the opinion of the manager, due to the poor channel of country abutting on the lode. A fine healthy body of ore is being met with in the works over this level, and gold is seen at each breaking down. PURU MINING DISTRICT.

Great activity is being displayed in the development of the mines situated on this section of our goldfields, aud •the number of company's operating are exploring a very large section of country. So far these developing works have revealed the fact that there are large masterly lodes traversing through the country from north to south, some of which have been proved to be of very great importance, inasmuch as the results obtained by bulk tests treated by the ordinary mill method have left no room to doubt that the quartz bodies in, question are a series with very great auriferous proclivities, showing promise of improvement at the deep areas. The channel of country accompanying the lode series has been pronounced by some of our most eminent geologists to be of a most desirable description for the existence of gold-bearing lodes, but what is really required in the district is an ample supply of capital wherewith to carry out the development and erect machinery. As far bs English capital is concerned, very little work has been accomplished by its aid. The only mine assisted.in tlißt respect is the Puru Consolidated Company's, who ha' c had expended over £1000 on their property, by which a large amount of work was carried out, but owing to the parties not being able to settle matters satisfactorily as regards terms, the negotiations fell through, and the mine has been on the hands of the company since From what can be gathered however it seems that several offers have been received for the mine, one of which it is thought will eventually be accepted. Regarding other properties under vigorous operation the Big Reef company have a splendid lode in hand from which highly gratifying results have been obtained. This mine is also under offer and so far as cavi be seen there is a reasonable prospect of the syndicate who have it in hand supplying a good substantial working capital for systematic development! and in the event of the satr>e good prospects being | met with at depth as on the surface, no j doubt developments on a large scale i will be attempted. The Wainoea Syndicate have been carrying on a large amount of prospecting, with very encouraging results, The Grand Triple, Morion-Puru, Waipuru, Wenona, Boss, Orion, Trogan, Kunera, and Ulysses j properties are all being extensively developed. i
