CRICKET.

SATURDAY'S LOCAL MATCHES

Owing no doubt to the counter attractions at the Eitnunga house, the number of spectators at Dodd's paddock was much smaller than usual, but those who did attend were rewarded by a good exhibition of cricket by United I. who, batting first, put up the very respectable total of 114 before they were all disposed of, and iv doing so kept Tararu in the field the whole of the afternoon. The bulk of the scoring was done by Day and Egginton. The first named, after narrowly escaping being bowled first ball gave barely the resemblance of a chance during his long innings. Going in first he saw five of the team disposed of before he was run out. Egginton's score equalled Day's, but he was let off two or three times, and was clearly responsible for Morgan being run out. The ordinary Tararu bowlers were quite off color and Cantley with 4 wickets for 30 runs was the only one to meet with any measure of success. There is no doubt that United have done well enough to make the champions extend themselves a little. The scores were: —

This match will be concluded within the next week or twoJUNIOR CRICKET. High School evidently determined to prove that their previous poor displays with the bat were not a true criterion of their ability, aud after dismissing United 11. for the poor total of 15 they went to the wickets with such heart that at call of time the score stood 6 wickets for 71.
